Volunteers Offer Food, Aid for Homeless on Tunis Streets

(AWP) - Some young volunteers in the ‘United for Humanity’ foundation are out every evening carrying fresh meal boxes to distribute to the homeless in the streets of the Tunisian capital, Tunis.

“We give nightly meals to the homeless who cannot afford to come to the restaurant. We prepare the menu, cook the meals, and put them in cars to give out in the streets where the homeless people spend the night,” said Mehdi Khoudi, a Foundation volunteer.

The young volunteers know the whereabouts, names and needs of the homeless, as well as the identities of the most vulnerable, who have received aid from the foundation for years.

Layla, 51, who has lived on the street for 27 years, said that the young people from the foundation offer her food and help her to have her voice heard by charitable persons.

Samy Ayyad, a volunteer, said that the foundation started its activities officially in 2016, noting that it offers services for homeless people, needy families and orphans.

“The foundation’s most important activity is distributing meals to homeless people. Food is a basic need for man,” he said.

“During previous years, we used to give out 320 meals on a daily basis, but after nine years, we now offer 70 to 80 meals per day. This indicates that we were able to take many people off the street by offering them dwelling places and jobs,” noted Ayyad.
