Egyptian FM Warns of The Consequences Of "Starvation and Siege" in Gaza

(AWP) - The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Wednesday with two United Nations officials to discuss the latest escalation in the Gaza, as he warned of what he called the policy of "collective punishment, starvation and siege" in the Strip.

The ministry said in a statement that Shoukry’s comments came as he hosted The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, and the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, in Cairo.

The statement added that Shoukry discussed with the two officials "ways to alleviate the burden of human suffering the Palestinian people are subjected to under the violent and continuous Israeli bombing".

The three officials agreed on "the need to spare civilians on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides from being exposed to the dangers of the ongoing military escalation, whether inside or around the Gaza Strip", the statement added.

Shoukry warned of "the consequences of expanding the implementation of policies of collective punishment, starvation, and siege in violation of the provisions of international humanitarian law, as this has dire effects and deteriorates the humanitarian conditions of civilians".
