Somali IDPs Receive Ramadan with Empty Pockets
(AWP) - Somali internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Al-Adala camp in the capital, Mogadishu, have nothing with which to receive the holy month of Ramadan, as they lack financial resources, and receive no foreign humanitarian aid.
IDPs from this camp, which houses approximately 600 families, mostly elderly people, women and children, appealed to international donors to send food aid quickly to meet their needs during the fasting month.
“We will be receiving Ramadan, while we have none of its requirements. We appeal to people of charity and humanitarian foundations to stretch a helping hand to us in the holy fasting month,” said Sheikh Adam Hassan, a displaced Somali man.
Habiba Hassan, a displaced Somali woman, said, “We are going through a hard time, as Ramadan is imminent. I have six children, and cannot provide food for them. We urge the humanitarian organizations to offer us aid.”
Rahma Saleh, another displaced Somali woman, said she used to work to get food for her children, but stopped in the past few days because she became sick, adding, “life here is hard.”
“We appeal to the organizations to send us relief aid, particularly during the blessed month of Ramadan, a time when heavenly rewards are increased,” she noted.
