Lebanese Army Imposes Security Measures After Shooting at U.S. Embassy
(AWP) - The Lebanese army has implemented security measures and tightened its presence following a gunfire incident around the U.S. Embassy in Awkar on Wednesday.
AWP video footage showed the deployment of army and internal security personnel in the embassy’s vicinity in Awkar.
The Lebanese army had earlier said that a Syrian national had fired shots at the U.S. Embassy, and that he was wounded after security forces in the area fired back at him.
The army added in a post on the X platform that the gunman was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and to determine the circumstances of the attack.
Following the incident, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut confirmed that the facility and staff were safe in the wake of a “small arms fire” near its entrance.
“Investigations are underway, and we are in close contact with host country law enforcement,” the embassy added.
Lebanon television channel MTV had reported that a gunman who shot at the embassy was killed in an exchange of fire, while other Lebanese media outlets indicated there was more than one attacker.
In a similar incident in September 2023, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces arrested a man who shot at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut and seized the weapon used in the attack.
