Largest Poultry Project in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region Produces 1M Chickens Annually
(AWP) - On the highway between the provinces of Duhok and Erbil, there is a large poultry business, the largest in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and the second largest in Iraq, producing nearly 4,000 chickens per day.
Nabil Zahir Younus, the project owner, said, “We supply slaughtered chicken throughout the Kurdistan region and Iraq. We sign agreements with poultry farm owners in the provinces of Erbil and Duhok throughout the year or on a biannual basis.”
He explained, “For each batch, we receive a million live chickens. We collect, slaughter and package them for distribution across the region as well as in central and southern provinces.”
However, Younus complained of difficulties facing poultry projects in Iraq because of prevalent diseases.
More than 300 people work at this project, which is located in the area of Rufia, in the Akre district of Duhok province.
Mohamed Yasser, a worker in the project, expressed that staff are devoted to the project because of the good treatment by the business owner.
He said, “The project owner is a good man and treats us as if we were brothers. Therefore, we take good care of the place in terms of cleanliness and dedication to our work. This project is a source of income for all of us. I recommend all young people seek projects like this to work on.”
Fatima Hassan, a university graduate, also expressed job satisfaction and advised young people to follow her lead.
She said, “I’ve been working at this project for over two years. I am a university graduate and people keep asking me why I am working here if I am a university graduate. My answer is that work is not shameful. We clean more than 50,000 chickens each day. I advise young people to work in this field.”
