Egyptian Red Crescent Completes First Phase of Khan Younis Refugee Camp

(AWP) - Officials from the Egyptian Red Crescent Society announced on Monday the construction of 300 tents, constituting the first phase of a refugee camp in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, to accommodate thousands of Palestinians displaced by the ongoing Israeli war on the enclave since October 7.

Egyptian officials said the camp was being set up over four stages with the total number of tents planned to reach 1,200.

Mohamed Hussein, the Egyptian Red Crescent’s Disaster Relief Manager, said, “The aim is to provide a safe shelter for Palestinians displaced due to war, aggression and the destruction of their homes. The plan is to bring them together in a well-equipped and safe place while ensuring the regular provision of food rations. My feeling is indescribable.”

He added, “I feel proud of being here inside Gaza with my Palestinian brothers, standing on the land of Palestinian Gaza, which will remain Palestinian, God willing.”

Mohamed Abul-Atta, the Palestinian Red Crescent’s provisions official, said the shelter centre is being established in cooperation with the Egyptian Red Crescent Society.

He explained, “This is the first phase, encompassing 300 tents. But the entire project will consist of 1,200 tents to accommodate between 6,000 to 7,000 people.”

The Israeli war on Gaza, going on for nearly three months, has caused the displacement of the majority of the Gazan population. UN agencies announced that about 1.9 million out of a total population of 2.3 million have been displaced from their homes.
