COP28 Protesters Beat Drums for Peace in Gaza

(AWP) - With the drums of war beating in the Gaza Strip for nearly two months, protesters on the sidelines of the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) beat their own drums for peace in Gaza, raising a large banner calling for an end to the war.

The protesters raised the banner which read ‘Ceasefire’ drawing attention from journalists. Some participants delivered speeches in which they accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

The demonstration came one day after UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated the importance of reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of civilians in light of the Israeli attacks on the strip.

The UAE’s news agency WAM reported that Sheikh Mohammed and Harris emphasised, during their meeting on the sidelines of COP28 on Saturday, the necessity of preventing the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and finding a clear path to peace based on a two-state solution.

On Friday, Israel resumed its war that started on October 7 after a weeklong truce during which prisoner and hostage exchanges took place.
