Art Initiative in Aden Aims to Inspire Yemen Rebuilding Efforts

(AWP) - Young girls in the al-Mualla district of the Yemeni province of Aden use their artistic talents on the facades of war-devastated buildings, turning them into beautiful art that captivates attention and highlights the urgent need for the war-torn country to rebuild after years of conflict.

Despite limited resources, it is evident which buildings have been enhanced by the artistic flair of Salma al-Asbahy, the head of the ‘There Was Life in Our Home’ initiative, and her fellow talented artists.

Salma explained, “The project directly highlights an important issue, which is the urgent need for the reconstruction of buildings destroyed in the war.”

International organisations say the war in Yemen has destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings.

Tania Meyer, World Bank Country Manager for Yemen, said the costs of reconstruction are estimated at $25 billion.

International organisations have restored several archaeological buildings in al-Mualla district and Aden that had been damaged in the war.

However, many residential buildings remain a witness to the tragedies of this period, devoid of inhabitants and life.
