UN Official to AWP: Number of Sudanese Refugees in Egypt is Increasing

(AWP) - The Representative of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to Egypt and to the League of Arab States told AWP that the numbers of Sudanese refugees in Egypt are on the rise, without providing a specific figure.

In an interview that took place on the sidelines of a UNHCR event held in Egypt, Dr Hanan Hamdan said that the number of registered refugees in the Middle East’s most populous country has reached 640,000.

Hamdan told AWP, “As we know, the numbers of Sudanese refugees and refugees in general are constantly increasing. The number of refugees registered with the UNHCR in Egypt has reached approximately 650,000 people, including Sudanese nationals.”

She added, “The refugee community in the world in general is suffering from an increase in numbers and a lack of funding. Therefore, we call on the international community to contribute and provide a helping hand.”

The UN official highlighted some of the reasons for the funding shortages, such as increases in wars, displacement crises, donor fatigue, and global economic crises.

According to the United Nations, over 10 million Sudanese have fled the country since fighting broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April 2023.
