UAE Aims to Increase Clean Energy Production to 19.8 Gigawatts in the Next 7 Years
(AWP) - The UAE Minister of Energy, Suhail AL-Mazroui said on Tuesday that his country plans to increase its green energy production to reach 19.8 gigawatts over the next seven years.
In his speech at the ninth edition of the World Green Economy Summit in Dubai, Al-Mazroui said that the UAE has updated its Energy Strategy 2030 "by setting a higher and more ambitious goal that includes tripling the levels of energy produced from renewable sources by 2030."
He added, "[We aim to increase] the share of stable clean energy to 30% of our total energy production by 2030 and reduce energy consumption through improved efficiency by 45% by 2050."
The summit is taking place just two days before the COP28 global climate summit, which will be held over two weeks in Dubai.
The summit is expected to represent an extension of the world's efforts to achieve reductions in harmful emissions.
During the World Green Economy Summit, Emirati Minister of Climate Change, Mariam Almheiri, said about COP28, "The UAE is committed, as the host country, to creating a spirit of initiative and action. We will try as much as we can to reach the best solutions in the history of climate summits. I stand before you today with this spirit of initiative."
Organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and the World Green Economy Organisation, the Green Economy Summit sees the participation of a large number of local and international dignitaries, officials, decision-makers, experts and international speakers, as well as representatives of government institutions, media outlets and academics.
The summit’s events, seminars and high-level dialogue sessions will discuss the issues of green policy, green finance, green technologies and innovation, green energy, and green partnerships.
