Rescue Operations Continue in Amizmiz in Search of Survivors in Morocco

(AWP) - Rescue operations have been going on in the area of Amizmiz, south of the Moroccan city of Marrakech, on Sunday as a devastating earthquake that took place at a late hour of Friday has left thousands killed or wounded.

The residents of Tifkarte, Amizmiz, started counting their victims and checking their losses as victims are still trapped under the debris.

“Nearly all the houses – 140 – collapsed in this catastrophe. Seventy-four bodies were brought from under the debris and still there are many more. The people here had severe damage. All that they had become under the rubble and also the children, a loss that can never be compensated. We urge the officials to offer help by opening the road and operating the electricity,” said a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another man who also declined to give his name said, “It is all clear. Each family has lost at least four to five persons. The deaths increased to 74 and still there are ten more under the rubble, in addition to the wounded who have different serious injuries. Even those who survived were doomed to be homeless.”

The quake, with a magnitude of seven degrees on the Richter scale, occurred in the province of Al Haouz and left 2,012 people dead and 2,059 others wounded so far.
