One Dead in Hadhramaut as Weather Disturbance Moves from Oman to Yemen and UAE
(Arab World Press) - The Yemeni Governorate of Hadhramaut announced the death of one person due to a bad weather front that hit the country on Wednesday, following another man’s death in floods in al-Mahra Governorate on Monday.
The Yemeni News Agency quoted the Undersecretary for Technical Affairs in Hadhramaut, Amin Barziq, as saying that initial reports confirmed the death of a citizen due to torrential rains that overwhelmed the governorate.
A senior Yemeni police official told AWP that the victim was a 24-year-old man, who was swept away by the floodwaters while swimming with his friends. He added that the heavy rains caused damage to local infrastructure.
The official said, “Initial reports also recorded damage to asphalt roads, the electricity network (no.33), the outflow of water from water wells in the hill feeding the city of al-Mukalla, and the sweeping away of a number of citizens’ cars.”
A strong low-pressure system hitting the southern Arabian Peninsula extended to Yemen on Wednesday, after causing the death of 19 people in the Sultanate of Oman and disrupting traffic and air travel in the United Arab Emirates.
Al-Mahra Governorate’s Media Centre reported the death of one person, who drowned in the floodwaters in Qishn district.
