Iran’s Acting FM Visits Damascus to Discuss Gaza and Regional Developments
(AWP) - Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani met his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mekdad in the Syrian capital Damascus, on his first foreign tour since taking office following the death of his predecessor, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in a plane crash last month.
During a press conference with Mekdad, Kani said that his visit to Damascus fell within the framework of discussing ways to support the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, particularly in the southern city of Rafah.
He said, “I am here in Syria today to discuss with my brothers in the Syrian Arab Republic the most important issue for the Muslim world, indeed for the whole world, which is stopping the crimes of the Israeli entity in Gaza against the oppressed, yet strong, Palestinian people. We came to discuss the immediate cessation of the Israeli entity’s crimes in Rafah as well as the issue of urgent and unconditional humanitarian aid delivery to the Palestinians in Gaza.”
Mekdad noted that Damascus was the first destination of the Iranian Foreign Minister’s tours outside his country, saying, “His Excellency the Foreign Minister is here with us now on his first visit outside the Islamic Republic of Iran. We stressed during our talks the importance of continuing these strategic relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran, Syria and other Arab countries, peoples and governments.”
He continued, “We are prepared for this process to proceed, if not at a faster or stronger pace, then at least we must maintain these strong ties achieved through the support of the people of Syria and Iran.”
