(AWP) - A convoy of ten trucks carrying around 500 tons of humanitarian aid has left the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, bound for the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
The Iraqi Red Crescent Society said in a statement that it is the largest food and medical aid convoy to be sent by land, in coordination with the Iraqi government communication team, to the people of Gaza.
Kassem Faraj Saleh al-Bedri, a member of the government communication team said that the convoy contains basic food supplies and life-saving medication.
Ahmed Abdul Amir Abdul Rahman, Director of Disaster Management at the Iraqi Red Crescent, said that aid is being delivered to the people of Gaza in coordination with the Egyptian and Palestinian Red Crescent societies.
He explained, “These are 360 tons of food aid, in addition to four trucks of medicines and medical supplies. The medicines are lifesaving, and there has been joint coordination based on the requests of our people in Gaza from the Palestinian Red Crescent about the things that the people there need. This is the first convoy and will be followed by many more. Over 250 tons of aid have already been sent by air.”
The Iraqi Red Crescent Society said in a statement that the aid trucks “will depart by land to Trebil border crossing and then proceed to the Jordanian port of Aqaba, then by ferry to the Egyptian port of Nuweiba before reaching Rafah.”
