Aswan Forum for Peace Prepares for UN Future Summit, IMF Executive Director Tells AWP
(AWP) - Mahmoud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said he considers the convening of the fourth Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, which kicked off in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Tuesday, as preparation for the United Nations Summit of the Future to be held in September 2024.
Mohieldin, a former Egyptian Minister of Investment, told AWP during the opening ceremony that the Aswan Forum will include discussions on developing international cooperation systems and international financial institutions.
Mohieldin said, “The forum directs its work and priorities towards the African continent, and not only holds these conferences and meetings annually, but also throughout the year. There are training and awareness programs and workshops, and a community has formed around this forum, especially as its benefits are greater for countries that have faced internal problems and conflicts or have been exposed to economic or security fragility.”
Mohieldin added, “This forum comes at an important time, as the world is preparing for the meetings that will take place at the United Nations at the Summit of the Future [2024]. There are specific topics related to the work of this forum at this upcoming summit. There are matters related to the development of international cooperation systems and international financial institutions and their role, as well as linking the reform of the global financial system with advancing work in various development fields, and also connecting it well with peacekeeping and achieving security.”
The Aswan Forum for Peace and Development’s opening ceremony was held in the presence of Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and several other Arab ministers.
